Siobhan McDonald @ Colliding Epistemes: Science for Art's sake?

Tonight at the Bozar (Centre for Fine Arts) in Brussels, JRC artist in residence Siobhan McDonald will be presenting the work developed throughout 2021 with scientist Arwyn Jones (JRC soil team) on soils, methane and permafrost.

The Bozar is the second venue for the travelling exhibition Colliding Epistemes, resulting from the Studiotopia Art&Science residency programme, with 13 residencies bringing together artists and scientists. It will run from the 6th May 2022 until 19th June 2022.

The exhibition is curated by Maja and Reuben Fowkes, renowned curators & art historians specialised in contemporary art and ecology.

 More about the exhibition:

“The boundaries between science and art have been completely destabilized by the Anthropocene. Can art practices reshape the standard of today’s scientific understanding? We’re bringing together artworks that emerged from a collaborative process in which laboratories and technologies have opened up to artistic invention. The impulse for such collaborations resides in the here and now of climate breakdown and biodiversity collapse, a planetary crisis.”

Colliding Epistemes investigates the consequences of bringing artistic positions and scientific expertise into close proximity, exploring the friction that arises from the collision of disciplines, methodologies and mindsets.

The diversity of approaches in this exhibition reflects the eclectic palette of scientific expertise in the Studiotopia project, from oncology and psychology to chemistry and biology. The results are equally wide-ranging: drawings, paintings, video artworks and experimental ceramics, providing unconventional responses to planetary challenges.

The STUDIOTOPIA project is a cultural exchange and art-science residency programme between different countries, artists and scientists, including the JRC.
