What’s new
A hands-on art–science workshop titled “Soil, wildfires and bioremediation” took place on 25 October 2025, at the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin. The session invited participants to explore how soils are transformed during and after wildfires, an ecological process that remains largely unfamiliar to the wider public.
About the workshop
The workshop, led by Margherita Pevere, examined the complex ecology of wildfires and the subsequent recovery of soil systems. Participants engaged directly with different soil substrates to understand how fire alters their structure, chemistry and biological activity. The session also introduces artistic experimentation with soil as a medium: participants were told to bring to the workshop a jar with soil from their area, and during the event they experienced how ecological art practices can serve as tools to observe, question and communicate environmental processes.
About the SciArt collaboration
The workshop was led by Margherita Pevere, an artist and researcher known for her work at the intersection of ecology and biotechnology, in collaboration with Dr Katharina von Oheimb and Dr Parm von Oheimb of the Museum für Naturkunde.
