SciArt: Science art society

How can artistic practices strengthen evidence-informed policymaking and broaden societal impact?

When:   Tuesday, January 20th 2026 , all day 9:00 – 17.30 (CET)

Where: CDMA Atrium, 21 Rue du Champ de Mars, Brussels

On Tuesday, 20 January 2026, JRC SciArt will co-host an in-person workshop in Brussels focused on how artistic practices can contribute to evidence-informed policymaking and expand the societal reach of science-for-policy work.

The workshop, hosted by the EU Policy Lab, will bring together external experts and institutions from across Europe to critically reflect on the current and future role of the arts within the European science-policy landscape. Rather than treating art as an add-on, the session will examine how artistic research and practice can meaningfully support the work of the European Commission, and what conditions are needed for such collaborations to be credible, useful and sustainable.

The event is jointly organised by EU Policy Lab (JRC’s innovation space for experimenting with new policy approaches), JRC SciArt (active since 2016 in developing transdisciplinary collaborations between science, art and policy), and the Centre Leo Apostel for Transdisciplinary Studies (CLEA) at Vrije Universiteit Brussel.

The session will be structured around three objectives:

  • To inspire: Explore how artistic approaches contribute to tackling complex policy challenges and societal transitions.
  • To connect: Build a network of allies across institutions committed to integrating the arts in policymaking.
  • To create: Envision new formats for embedding art-science within the European Commission and sketch what is needed to sustain such integration.
