On Thursday 18/05 from 09:00 to 10:20 am JRC SciArt project leader Adriaan Eeckels and project curator Caterina Benincasa will be presenting at ISEA International Symposium 2023 in Paris, as part of the Institutional Presentations. They will introduce the deep intersections between artistic inquiry, scientific research and policymaking that operate within the project with the aim to shape social relations, cultural frameworks and policy structures.
As examples they will draw on the artists currently in residence in the framework of NaturArchy: Towards a Natural Contract, which wants to re-imagine our relationship with nature and the more-than-human.
Abstract
Our contribution to ISEA wants to briefly introduce what the JRC SciArt project does at the intersection of artistic inquiry, scientific research, and policymaking. After an initial contextualisation of how our artscience programme is linked to EU policymaking, we will discuss our current programme on the topic of “NaturArchy: Towards a Natural Contract”, which wants to re-imagine how we relate to nature and more-than-human - currently characterised by a sense of sovereignty and exploitation, possession and control. Can we rethink our connection with the environment and non-human scales? How can art science policymaking work together to rethink our entanglement with the non-human, and imagine how they can participate in shaping social relations, cultural frameworks and policy structures?
