NOS FUTURS RADIO: Le Biais Vert collective @ the NaturArchy exhibition

In the context of the NaturArchy exhibition, and as part of its public engagement programme, the Le Biais Vert collective presented Nos Futurs Radio, a temporary mediation space that brings to life the fictional world of Diamant Palace web series, produced in 2022. This radio station is a tool for meeting the players re-enchanting relations between humans and non-humans, inventing, dreaming, thinking or telling stories of possible futures.

Joining forces with Radio Campus, the broadcasts took place throughout June and July 2024 on Saturday afternoons, giving voice to artists, collectives, associations, activists, and all people located in Belgium who concretely work to rethink ways of inhabiting the city and the world and believe that we can rebuild relationships with living things without harming them.

As part of the programme of events around the NaturArchy exhibition opening, Saturday 25th May was the kick-off event titled: Nonhuman lives in Brussels, with Tom et Nicolas Valckenaere, plastic artists and amateur naturalists; Chloé Vanden Berghe, ULB researcher on Brussels fauna; Félicien Bogaerts and Elias Sanhaji from the Le Biais Vert collective.

All broadcasts are open to the public, aired on radio and on the Le Biais Vert YouTube channel.

01/06/2024 | NOS FUTURS RADIO + RADIO CAMPUS: Demineralize and revitalize the city

The first meeting spotlights the Dallas Collective, through Salomon explaining the Casse-Dalle project carried out in partnership with Gilbard

Casse-Dalle means to perforate, core, saw, find the ground. To draw, compose, assemble, build. Using simple processes, to transform an inhospitable space into a lively, welcoming and recreational place. Together transforming a concrete slab, a parking lot, into a minimalistic garden. For NaturArchy, Casse-Dalle offers a series of workshops around the transformation of the 43B slab into a garden.

Gilbard is a non-profit organization based in Anderlecht since 2019, which works starting from reused materials to designing local projects around art and design. Experiment, Exchange, Promote: the collective carries out different activities around a place of life and exchange. The recovery and barter of materials, the pooling of resources, local activation, experimentation in arts and design and the management of local design projects.

For several years, Dallas has been developing research focused on soil demineralization. Its vision revolves around the creation of occasional green spaces directly linked to the urban environment, halfway between gardens and urban wastelands.

08/06/2024 | NOS FUTURS RADIO + RADIO CAMPUS: On the ruins of capitalism, the Josaphat wasteland

The second meeting gave the floor to a collective which has organized itself to protect the Josaphat wasteland, a 24-hectare plot of land in the heart of the Brussels region, on the border between Schaerbeek and Evere. It is a former marshalling yard that was gradually transformed into a biodiversity reserve. It is home to numerous species (nearly 1,200 observed, including 112 birds, 120 bees, 33 butterflies and 32 dragonflies). It is a unique place, a refuge for wildlife otherwise chased from its natural habitat (spreading of pesticides, soil mineralization, etc.) and which must be preserved from extinction.

15/06/2024 | NOS FUTURS RADIO + RADIO CAMPUS: Justice for green spaces in Brussels

We are nature spoke at the third meeting. This association brings together citizen collectives and local endeavours to preserve the natural spaces and living soils of Brussels. The association also fights for a social ecology and a right of access to green spaces for the most precarious social classes.

Faced with the destruction of these spaces in Brussels, the We Are Nature.Brussels association was formed by citizens to launch legal action and remind the regional government of its responsibilities. That it keep its environmental commitments and stop issuing authorizations to build on natural spaces in Brussels. The case is currently ongoing.

The fifth public meeting featured Coline Ramonet-Bonis, visual artist currently showcasing her work, Aqueous Memories at the NaturArchy exhibition. Her multidisciplinary practice comes to life in installations, immersive worlds that she considers as heterotopias, that is to say other places. Interior cabins, fractures where landscapes and narratives unfold, constructed on the edges between the real and the virtual, science and magic.

20/07/2024 | NOS FUTURS RADIO + Radio Campus : Combining the right to housing and the right to life

The sixth and final public meeting gave the floor to IEB (Inter-Environnement Brussels). For fifty years, the association has brought together collectives, groups and committees of residents of Brussels who are mobilizing to preserve their neighborhoods, their living conditions and their environments. For the IEB, the meeting between environmental justice and social justice is essential to make the city habitable for all and requires, to achieve this, the establishment of real urban democracy.

With Cataline Sénéchal and Stéphanie D'Haenens, in charge of Inter-Environnement Brussels’ mission.

14/09/2024 | NOS FUTURS RADIO: The end of the “wild” world - Decolonizing our view of the living

Contesting and discussing the notion of “savage”, the speakers will explore the decolonial issues of ecology to highlight the historical and political links between colonization and the destruction of the living. The question of the “savage” requires questioning the white Eurocentric view of nature, of the living and of otherness. How can we escape the relationships of domestication and distancing of the ways of life that this word presupposes? Putting an end to this notion can undoubtedly bring about the possibility of a view that renews the relationships between “nature” and humans.

With: Wissam Xelka, Maryam Kolly, Olivier Marboeuf & Benedikte Zitouni.

In this context, we would like to invite you to two special episodes of Nos Futurs Radio, featuring various Molenbeek associations. The theme? The relationship between patriarchy and ecological disasters. Each broadcast will be followed by a free guided tour of the NaturArchy exhibition.

21/09/2024 | NOS FUTURS RADIO : Man has eaten the earth, this kind of ecological disasters

It was said that Man had eaten the earth. But it was not always very clear historically, nor politically. We had spoken of a “Man” with a capital “M”, making humans of all times equally responsible for the disastrous present that had been made for us. We had then seen the emergence of the term Anthropocene to explain the moment from which humanity had begun to be a geological factor capable of modifying biological rhythms, transforming the landscape or changing the climate. But we did not all share this idea. Our ancestors had no more decided to extract coal than to go into the mine. The colonized populations, the lands plundered and exploited to enrich the white bourgeoisies could not reasonably understand that they were responsible for global warming in the same way as Total.

Still others did not find themselves in this writing of history that made them responsible for the joint domination of the living, of women, of non-white people. In the institutionalization of capitalist, racist, sexist exploitations. The Anthropocene was too vague an idea of what was happening. To read what was happening, one should not underestimate the consequences of the combination of the stories of the destruction of worlds. In her book, Caliban and the Witch, Silvia Federici recounted how capitalism had fed on the exploitation of women as a reproductive apparatus of the labor force. She also explained to us how the enclosure movement had been driven in particular by these women who worked the land and who fought to defend the commons against the predation of large landowners who wanted to exploit the land and the bodies of these women for commercial purposes.

With: Anna Toumazoff and Elias Sanhaji from the collective Le Biais Vert; Pascale Barret, Coline Ramonet-Bonis and Clémentine Balcells hosted by Anna Toumazoff.
