Plastic Magnitudes: Workshop and Production Update

Artist JD Whitman has been implementing numerous art and science workshops for her project, Plastic Magnitudes  - currently being produced in the framework of NaturArchy, with an upcoming exhibition  at iMAL - with community members from County Clare and County Galway, Ireland.

While creating sculptural compositions from community collected plastic and marine plastic debris, participants discussed: the visual art elements and principles of sculpture, light, and shadow; the life cycle of plastics; plastic pollution, its negative impact on marine ecosystems, and plastics policy in Ireland and the EU; current plastic particulate research from the Joint Research Center; eco-anxiety and climate anxiety; and Individual and community-based solutions.

All compositions made by community members during these workshops will be included in Plastic Magnitudes final installation and online project platform.

The artwork will be a multisensory experience placing viewers (and their community) at the center of the highlighted research on plastic, connecting them directly as contributors to the problem and solution. It is the outcome of residencies for JD at JRC and a long collaboration period betwen the artist and researchers from the Technologies for Health sector at JRC.
